Requirements and Registration
CSEM is a requirement within the College of Arts and Letters for students who are earning either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Students who declare a dual degree, i.e., those who are earning a degree from the College of Arts and Letters as well as a Bachelor degree from another College, must complete the requirements of both Colleges, and therefore must take the College Seminar.
CSEM is a College of Arts and Letters requirement and cannot fulfill any other requirements. CSEMs are interdisciplinary and are therefore not cross-listed with other degree programs.
Students enrolled in other Colleges—Business, Science, Engineering, or Architecture—who take a major in the College of Arts and Letters without also obtaining a degree from the College of Arts and Letters are exempted from College Seminar. Those students must complete only the requirements of the specific major they choose.
Please visit a dean in the Arts and Letters Undergraduate Studies Office, 104 O’Shaughnessy Hall, if you have questions about your status.
The following groups of students may need to obtain an override before they can register:
- Juniors or Seniors who, as sophomores, participated in a Notre Dame off-campus program that ran for a full academic year and did not offer a College Seminar at the off-campus location.
- Juniors or Seniors who joined the College of Arts and Letters as transfer students from other colleges within the University of Notre Dame after their sophomore year.
- Juniors or Seniors who joined the College of Arts and Letters as transfer students from other institutions after their sophomore year.
Students from these groups should contact the administrative assistant for the College Seminar program either in person in 300 O’Shaughnessy Hall, by phone at 631-4265, or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
